Blogging from the field

This summer, eight Public Service Fellows and Interns will be blogging about their public service project. Students will be working this summer in places such as Jakarta, Indonesia, Surrey, British Columbia in Canada, and in rural Uganda. A short description about the students’ projects is below.

Thiago Vieira (, part of the The Indian Mobile Initiative team) will travel to India this summer to use mobile technology to encourage social enterprise in college students.

Benji Moncivaiz ‘11 will travel to the slums of Nairobi with Sanergy, contributing to redesigning the sanitation center and co-directing the Nairobi fabrication and construction teams.

Cydnie Trice ’12- will travel to Hawaii to assist with a campaign to build a local, sustainable food economy on Hawaii Island.

Jaymes Dunsmore G will be working for the City of Los Angeles Urban Design Studio to improve access to public transportation, increase pedestrian and bicycle safety, and enhance the quality of life in neighborhoods around existing and planned Metro stations

Paul Lazarescu ’13 will spend this summer working with Transitions Foundation in Antigua, Guatemala, helping to develop a hybrid wheelchair – one that can be used both for everyday and for active use.

Saba Mohsin ’11 along with Amrita Karambelkar will be working with the Ministerio Ciencia y Tecnologia in Costa Rica to design and run a high school Young Talent Club.

Stephen Kennedy G and Alice will work with an urban development and design non-profit, Solo Kota Kita (Our City Solo). The internship will support the City Development Strategy project for three cities in Indonesia (Solo, Pekalongan and Banjarmasin), in collaboration with UN HABITAT and the Cities Alliance.
