The MIT Public Service Center partners with the Cambridge Community Center to run a literacy tutoring program for elementary school aged children called ReachOut. During the 2010-2011 school year, fifty-five MIT students participated in the program as volunteer or work-study tutors, meeting with the same child twice a week to tackle reading, writing, and language arts activities. One tutor explained, “It took me by surprise how much sheer encouragement can change a student’s performance. At a young stage of life, students feel that there is not much that they are able to do compared to others, but with the proper encourage they will quickly learn that they too can master the art of reading.” In this photo Kayla Barrientos ’12 reads with her student.
