Center for Materials Science and Engineering

Description:
The Center for Materials Science and Engineering offers this one-week, hands-on workshop for middle and high school science, engineering, and technology teachers each summer. STEP 2009 is subtitled \"Dustbusting by Design: Applying the Engineering Design Process.\" During the course of the workshop, participants will learn about the engineering design process by being immersed in it. After considering the desirable features of the hand-held vacuum, the physics of its operation, and the design challenge presented by its motor, participants will design and construct their own motors to meet performance criteria. The final day of the program will be devoted to analyzing the motors built by the group and brainstorming possible related projects for use in K-12 classrooms. The program will taught by Prof. Steven Leeb in a laboratory on the MIT campus July 20-24, 2009.

Additional Details:
STEP is a nonresidential program that is scheduled from 9:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Participants receive a stipend of $300. PDPs are available to Massachusetts teachers. Registration forms may be downloaded from the website. The program is limited to ten teachers per year.
